At the occasion of its 25th anniversary, Aruba Hi-Winds announces the raise of the cash prizes to be won by the first three in the PRO divisions in Windsurfing Slalom and in King-of-the-Huts! The 25th annual Aruba Hi-Winds welcomes the PWA GRAND SLAM!

This year, the Aruba Hi-Winds is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The first edition, back in 1987, featured slalom racing at Eagle Beach, where the top racers of the world were lured by an interesting amount of prize money, sponsored by the Aruban government. The success of the 1st edition draw the attention of the Professional Boardsailors Association (PBA, now the PWA) and in 1988, the event was added to the World Tour. Windsurfing legends like Robby Naish, Anders Bringdal, Pascal Maka, Nevin Sayre and Björn Dunkerbeck came to the island to compete. Top-ranking women like Nathalie Lelièvre, Jutta Mueller, Nathalie Simon and Britt Dunkerbeck came as well. In the early nineties, one of the most grueling events of the entire PWA-tour was held on Aruba: the legendary Round-the-Island Race, a long distance race of around 70 miles, which was won twice, in ’91 and ’92, by Björn Dunkerbeck in just over 3 hours. Government sponsorship dried up in the mid-nineties but the Aruba Hi-Winds survived as an amateur event; it was held at the Fishermen’s Huts and welcomed several new additions to its menu: Super-Kids races, Freestyle (‘King of the Huts’) and Kitesurfing at Boca Grandi. Local talents and those from its sister- islands honed their talents and participated in the Aruba Hi-Winds: Taty, Tonky, Björn and Kiri from Bonaire became ‘King-of-the-Huts’ and went on to reach PWA World Tour top rankings, as did Aruba’s own Sarah-Quita, who has captured the title Freestyle World Champion for the past three years.

At the occasion of this year’s anniversary edition of the Aruba Hi-Winds, the PWA World Tour is adding to the festivities, making a stop on Aruba with its Freestylers and Slalom racers. This Grand Slam event, held from June 19 to 26th is followed by the 25th Aruba Hi-Winds (June 29 to July 4), together making it a true Pro-Am extravaganza, reviving the spirit of 25 years ago.
